Liquid Sort gives you a row of test tubes with coloured liquid stacked up inside them, thoroughly mixed, and asks you to unmix it. Every colour has to end up alone in a tube of its own, filled to the top, and the only tool you have is pouring.
The rule that makes it a puzzle rather than a chore is what you are allowed to pour onto: an empty tube, or liquid of the same colour. Nothing else. So a tube whose top layer is blue can only go somewhere blue or somewhere empty, and every pour changes which pours are possible next.
Empty tubes are the whole game. They are the only place an awkward colour can go, and the moment you spend one carelessly the board tightens. Good players treat an empty tube the way a chess player treats a tempo — something you spend deliberately, not something you use because it is there.
An empty tube will accept anything, which makes it the only escape route when every other tube is blocked. Filling one with the first colour that comes to hand is how a solvable board becomes an unsolvable one.
A colour spread across four tubes blocks four tops. Consolidating one colour completely frees more room than making small progress on three, even though the board looks busier while you do it.
Only the top layer of each tube can ever move, so the state that matters is the row of exposed colours. Reading the board that way makes the available moves obvious, and it is much faster than studying every stack in full.
Ask what the pour exposes underneath, not just where the liquid goes. A move that uncovers a colour you can immediately place is worth far more than one that buries what you needed.
A pour needs the destination to be empty, or its top layer to be the same colour as the one you are pouring. If neither is true the move is simply not allowed.
