About Penalty Shootout

A penalty shootout is the most one-on-one moment in football, and this is a game made of nothing else. Five kicks each, taken alternately, under the real IFAB rules — and if it is level after five, sudden death until somebody misses.

What makes it a game rather than a coin flip is that you play both jobs. When you are not taking the kick you are in goal: you tap a spot on the goalmouth before the strike, and your keeper dives there the instant the ball is hit. Guess right and you have saved it. Guess the way the striker was always going to go and you have not.

It runs in 3D, and both the online modes and the match against the computer come in a day version and a night version — the same pitch under floodlights, which changes how the ball reads against the crowd more than you would expect.

How to play

  1. Pick a mode: invite a friend, take a random opponent, or play the computer. Choose day or night.
  2. Kicks alternate. You take one, they take one, five each.
  3. When you are kicking, aim your shot at the goal — placement matters more than power.
  4. When you are keeping, tap where you think the ball is going before the kick is struck. Your keeper commits there as soon as the striker makes contact.
  5. Most goals after five kicks wins. If the score is level, it goes to sudden death: one kick each until one side scores and the other does not.

Tips and strategy

Corners beat power

A keeper who guesses the right side still has to reach the ball. A shot high into a corner beats a correct guess far more often than a hard shot down the middle does.

Do not become predictable over five kicks

This is a five-round game against one person who is watching all five. Two shots to the same corner is information, and the third one will be saved.

In goal, the middle is a real option

Most players dive because diving feels like goalkeeping. Against an opponent who has noticed you always commit to a side, standing still is the save nobody expects.

Sudden death rewards the calm one

Once it goes past five kicks every single shot is a match point. Pick the corner you trust rather than the one you think will look impressive.

Frequently asked questions

Do I play the keeper too?

Yes — whoever is not taking the kick is in goal. You tap a spot on the goalmouth before the strike and the keeper commits there when the ball is hit.

What happens if it is 5–5?

Sudden death, the same as the real thing: one kick each until one side scores and the other misses.

What is the difference between day and night?

The same match under floodlights rather than daylight. It is a visual variant you choose before the match, available in every mode.

Can I play it on my own?

Yes, against the computer. The two-player modes need either a friend you invite or a random opponent.
